The American Conservation Coalition is building the conservative environmental movement to realize a cleaner, more prosperous world that fosters collaboration in the pursuit of environmental conservation. Our growing team operates with excellence, executing our theory of change across grassroots, grasstops, communications, and administrative functions.

The Director of Finance role reports to the Chief Operating Officer and will lead ACC’s financial strategy, forecasting, reporting, and controls, with a focus on improving budget accountability, board transparency, and restricted-fund management. This is a full-time, virtual role that can be based anywhere within the U.S.

Responsibilities

  • Financial Strategy & SLT Leadership: Serve as ACC’s senior finance leader on the Senior Leadership Team, advising the Executive Team on financial strategy, resourcing decisions, organizational risk, and long-term sustainability
  • Forecasting, Runway & Multi-Year Planning: Own quarterly forecasting and multi-year planning, maintaining clear runway and scenario models that help leadership understand tradeoffs, funding assumptions, and future financial needs
  • Budgeting & Department Accountability: Lead annual budgeting and departmental budget management, implementing a consistent budget vs. actuals process that flags risks early and supports department leaders in managing spend and adjustments
  • Restricted Funding & Grant Financial Management: Build stronger systems for managing restricted vs. unrestricted funds, including grant-level tracking, burn-rate monitoring, and internal visibility into available, committed, and allowable funds
  • Board Reporting & Financial Transparency: Establish a reliable reporting cadence, including concise monthly updates, quarterly reports, and robust end-of-year reporting that translates financial results into a clear narrative
  • Dashboards & Decision-Support Tools: Improve financial reporting tools and dashboards beyond spreadsheets to deliver consistent, easy-to-digest reporting for leadership, the board of directors, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Controls, Policies & Risk Management: Own financial controls, policies, and risk management across the organization, ensuring strong approval systems, compliance posture, and scalable procedures that protect ACC as it grows

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of advanced nonprofit finance experience
  • CPA preferred but not required
  • Experience in multi-year forecasting, financial reporting, 990 and audit process leadership, grant and restricted funding management, and direct report leadership
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks
  • Ability to travel up to 4% of the time (roughly 15 days per year) for meetings and retreats

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: The range for this position is $130,000 – $150,000, commensurate with experience
  • Insurance: Medical insurance options are covered 100%. 99% coverage of dental and vision insurance. Short-term disability and life insurance are also offered at 100% cost coverage
